What’s Inside an Estimote?

Inside an Estimote

What’s inside an Estimote beacon? Not much – and that’s one of the amazing things about Bluetooth LE. Whether you’re using a tiny dongle that you plug into the USB port on your laptop or you have one of the little turtles from Estimote the largest thing they usually hide is a battery.

Of course, size doesn’t matter. Each Estimote hides “a powerful 32-bit ARM® Cortex M0 CPU with 256kB flash memory, accelerometer, temperature sensor and what is most important – 2.4 GHz Bluetooth 4.0 Smart (also known as BLE or Bluetooth low energy) bidirectional radio”.

But in the interests of science (and our unwavering compulsion to take stuff apart) we disemboweled an Estimote today to see what it looks like inside. Here’s a few photos from our autopsy.
